The low, sleek car with a V-12 engine was introduced this past Spring as successor to the mighty Murcielago, which had an eight year run ending in 2010. Company officials say the car has been a hit thus far -- there's an 18-month backorder.
Several of the cars were seen around the Monterey area this week, including a flat-black example that drew crowds outside an Italian restaurant Friday night. Orange and white versions were on display at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering, along with a rolling chasis with the extraordinary engine that showed off the car's carbon fiber tub.
While the marque may not share the racing pedigree of larger rival Ferrari, some fine examples from the golden age of sports cars could be found among the sea of Ferraris and other exotics shown by proud owners.
One of the finest examples was a blue (or Azzurro) 1965 350GT Superleggera owned by Californian Steve Lindsay, shown above and at right:
He has owned the car since 1995 and, he said, the car won best in show at the Concourso Italiano car show here three years ago.
The was repained 21 years go and has spent almost all its life in California after being imported into San Francisco in 1970. It is a celebration of beautiful curves, with even curved side windows. It has a 3.5 liter V12 motor fed by 6, no doubt thirsty, Webber carbs. The car is No. 58 of 122 produced.
"It's hard to find a straight line on this car,'' Lindsay says. And best of all, Lindsay keeps the car on the road. He's driven several 1,000 mile rallys with the Lambo.
"I just can'be believe a car this old runs this well,'' he said. "it's a testament to the guy that designed it -- and to the guy who maintains it for me."
Lindsay says he'd much rather have his historic car than the latest model."It's a car I wouldn't hesitate to drive to L.A.," he said.
