Honda to recall about 960,000 Fits, other models

Honda Motor Co. said today it would recall about 960,000 Fit subcompacts and other models globally to repair defects including malfunctioning power window switches.

No accidents have been reported due to the defects, a Honda spokesman in Tokyo said.

In Japan, the recall covers Fit vehicles produced between October 2005 and October 2009. The subcompacts were also sold overseas, mainly in China and other Asian countries.

Honda also plans to recall 26,000 CR-Z compact hybrids globally due to programming problems with the engine control unit, The Associated Press reported. Of those, 5,626 vehicles are being recalled in the United States, Honda said.

On Sunday, Honda also said it would recall 80,111 CR-V small SUVs from the 2006 model year in the U.S. to replace the power window master switch.

"The design of the power window master switch can allow residue from interior cleaners to accumulate, which can, over time with switch use, cause the electrical contacts to degrade and may lead to a fire in the switch," Honda said in a statement.

The spokesman said the company was not disclosing the cost of the global recall.

Honda, hampered by inventory shortages stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan, posted a 6 percent decline in U.S. sales through August compared with the same period last year. The total U.S. market has generated an 11 percent sales gain during that period.
